Shut up, the Second: Science Cinema 2024 Starts

Whether educational justice, climate change, or fair production chains - with the series ‘wissen.schafft.wir. KINO’s series, “Mensch in Bewegung”, a joint project between the two universities, addresses topics from current social discourse. The cinema experience, science, and dialogue are combined in an equally informative and entertaining way, because, unlike traditional cinema screenings, not just one film is shown: At each screening, academics from the KU and THI are on hand to shed light on the film's topic from their perspective in dialogue with the audience.

The science cinema, which takes place on three dates in the vhs cinema hall and once in the Audi arthouse cinema, will show the films ‘Tomorrow - die Welt ist voller Lösungen’ (5th of November), ‘Made in Bangladesh’ (12th of November), ‘Bis hierhin und wie weiter?’ (21st of November) and ‘Malala - Her Right to Education’ (26th of November) will be shown.

In this documentary film, actress Mélanie Laurent and activist Cyril Dion embark on a journey around the globe. They are on the lookout for projects and initiatives on the subject of the future and climate change that are already pursuing democratic ideas and realizing sustainable business and living. The film shows that even now, something is already happening in the world, but everyone has to pull together.

12th of November | 18.30 - 21.15: Made in Bangladesh

With Dr Stefan Schweiger, Research Manager at the THI

The film focuses on the seamstress Shimu, who works in a textile factory in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. When a fire breaks out in the factory and it remains closed for several weeks, the seamstresses receive no money. In protest against the exploitative working conditions, Shimu decides to form a trade union together with her colleagues. Despite repression from the factory management and growing pressure from her husband, she is prepared to raise her voice and stand up for her rights.

The film is not only the gripping story of a courageous woman. It also sheds light on the working conditions of the more than three million women in Bangladesh who are employed in the textile industry.

21st ofNovember | 20.00 - 22.00:So far and what next?

With the director of the film, Felix Maria Bühler, and Dr Gerhard Schönhofer, project coordinator of the ‘Transferraum Zukunft’ at THI

The film shows the harsh reality of climate activism in an often hostile world. A group of committed people find themselves at a crossroads where there seems to be no way out. Between resistance, powerlessness, and resignation, they search for new ways to awaken hope in a seemingly hopeless world. ‘So far and what next?’ offers intense and emotionally charged insights into the lives of its protagonists, who, in their efforts to strengthen climate protection, repeatedly test their limits and mobilize the power of the community to get closer to their goals.

The event will take place at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt.

26th ofNovember | 18:30: Malala and her right to education

With Dr Veronika Hecht, Central Institute for Marriage and Family in Society (KU), and Amrei Pauli, research assistant in the ‘Mensch in Bewegung’ project

The documentary film is a haunting portrait of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, who was put on the death list by the Taliban in her home country of Pakistan. Malala was traveling home on her school bus in 2012 when she was seriously injured by a bullet to the head in an assassination attempt. Together with her father, the then fifteen-year-old had become the focus of the Taliban because they were campaigning for the right to education for girls. The assassination sparked a worldwide outcry of indignation. Malala miraculously survived and is now a global activist for girls' right to education.
