First REMO project meeting in presence after two years

From 25.07. to 29.07.2022, three team members from the Tunisian Université de Carthage - École Nationale Des Sciences Et Technologies à Borj Cédria (ENSTAB) and three from the Moroccan Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI) visited us at the Institute of new Energy Systems. Together we continued to work on the content of the Renewable Energies-based E-Mobility in Higher Education (REMO) project:

One of the focal points of our discussions was the overarching question of how countries can succeed in strengthening the independence of their energy supply and at the same time promote the share of renewable energies.

We exchanged views on this with the local German grid operator LEW from Augsburg and got an overview of both the overall development of the regional grid operator and the  challenges the company is currently facing, resulting from political decisions.
These insights into German procedures and processes served as an impulse to discuss the risks and opportunities of the North African energy supply system on Thursday, 28 July 2022, together with Mr Dieter Miener from the German industry partner IBC SOLAR AG and digitally participating representatives from the national electricity supplier STEG from Tunisia and other Tunisian industry representatives.
The participants affirmed that an exchange of lessons-learned with other countries is extremely useful and important to support the global efforts to provide a secure but at the same time green energy supply.

With the six guests from North Africa, we also visited exemplary solar, wind and biogas plants in Bavaria in order to better understand the different potentials and challenges in acquisition and operation. The exchange of experiences with local operators was particularly informative and underlined the advantages also for North African countries of generating energy as decentralised as possible and using it locally.

The three university partners AUI, ENSTAB and THI also used the project meeting to promote the further development of higher education in the field of renewable energies and e-mobility. In order to successfully master the transition to a more sustainable energy supply as well as mobility, establishing local expertise is vital. In close cooperation with partners from industry, politics and academia, the REMO partners have therefore been working since the beginning of the project on additional content that is to be taught at the universities as practice-oriented as possible.

The REMO university partners will meet again in autumn 2022 at AUI in Ifrane in Morocco, where a one-day REMO conference will take place in November.
The REMO project is funded by the DAAD with funds from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The project period ends at the end of December 2023.
